OK, I hate to start this thread, but you kow it was bound to happen....
If they did a remake of Hardcastle & McCormick today...who would (or should) they cast in the leading roles?

Okay, let me go on the record as saying I don't want to see Ben Stiller as McCormick.

Or Owen Wilson, Ben Affleck or David Spade!

What about Brian Dennehy as Hardcastle (although I really wouldn't want a remake at all)?

Okay, I'm having a hard time with this, especially with the age of the judge. My first thought was James Garner, but he's getting kinda old. But, dang, I sure do think he'd be a fine MCH. Next thought, Mandy Patankin, but he's almost too young. Hm. I might have to keep thinking about that. And maybe David Krumholtz for McC.

ok, i'm going to agree with both of you and say brian dennehy AND david krumholtz although DK might need to be a bit. . .'goofier', because right now i don't see him as able to be as much of an. . .ASS as mark is. (NOBODY get mad at me, ok? i LOVE mark, but there are times when i have to COVER MY EYES when watching H&M, because really? he's an ass) i'm specifically thinking of milt's friend's retirement dinner, and the persona he took for the dating club and when he's honest-to-god FLEXING for that DA woman, but there's more, i know. but i still love him.

hmm... interesting thread
for the judge, i dunno, thats a tough one... if he was a little older (i think he's 50 right now) i could honestly see peter gallagher doing it (sandy cohen from the OC) he kind of reminds me of milt (probably because he took in ryan after he and his brother stole that car and ryan is now living in his poolhouse) i could just see him as the kind of guy who would go after cases like milt and mark do.
as for mccormick, thats a tough one, maybe someone like Danny Masterson (stephen from that 70's show) he has that smartass attitude like mark did.... come to think of it... what about Red forman (Kurtwood Smith ) as milt...
just watch how those 2 bicker on that 70's show and put a hardcastle and mccormick twist on it, i think it could work... red always calling stephen a dumbass or something like that, and stephen always making jokes about how old red is, etc... i could see those 2 in a H&M episode.

Okay, well, first, I'm not having any problem picturing DK as "ass-ish". Have you ever seen Charlie when he starts feeling all insecure and vulnerable? Well, okay, for Charlie it manifests itself as being subdued and slightly petulant (and sometimes overly conceited), and for Mark it comes out as . . . um, well, I don't even know what you call that thing that he becomes! But, still, it's driven by self-esteem issues in both cases, just slightly different ways of showing up. But, Charlie Eppes aside, have you ever seen Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle? I promise, if you watch that, you will have no problem picturing DK as "goofy". My son didn't even recognize him. Now, part of that was strictly physical-- he had a beard, and really didn't look anything like Charlie. But, even once I pointed out who it was, the character was so different, he had a really hard time wrapping his mind around it being the same guy.

I think what Mark becomes can be partially defined as bravado. A false front of confidence to protect the insecure persona waiting behind it to be kicked or sneered at. It's also, I think, partly an attempt to look at ease. "I'm comfortable in this situation, no problem." Who agrees? Is there more to it than that?

Seems to me it probably stems from trying to get through a variety of situations over which he really had little control, starting with finding himself on his own at a fairly young age, and all the way up through Quentin. It probably started as a form of true self-preservation. I figure folks who find themselves in those types of situations really can't afford to appear too vulnerable-- not if they want to survive. He could've actually allowed himself to turn into an arrogant S.O.B., someone noone could get close to, so noone could hurt. But, he chose to fake it with his scaled down version, instead. That, and lots and lots of humor.

i think you're right, that's what i meant, even though i said "ass". (i have trouble thinking of the right words, sometimes)
he's just trying to fit in to all these weird places/event/situations that milt drags him into, and he's trying to show that he's not intimidated --although i think he really is-- and he goes a little. . .overboard.

There's no one that could play those roles as good as BK & DHK.

Oh dear god. No film. Ever. The DVD sets are enough!!! That about sums up my thoughts too. Given the complete farces that have been made in the name of 'tribute' movies recently, think I'll pass.
