Re: "A Chip Off the Ol' Milt": And the two of them watching the same movie even when they're not together ...Yeah, where was call-waiting when they needed it?

That's got to be one reason it's not the all-time favorite. You feel so sad knowing it's the last one, even though I remember thinking at the time, "well, if it has to end, that's the perfect way to do it."

Nobody's voting for 'Chip off the Old Milt'? It has Mark threatening the repo guy. Oh, I feel a misquote coming on, but: "We don't steal from him, we don't do anything to hurt that man." And the two of them fumbling over Mark finally announcing that he's attending law school, plus the "I'm the best friend you'll ever have." "I know that." admission. And, right before the epilogue, Mark asking his law professor if he was only hired because he was an ex-con and he'd roll over if asked, and then hearing the answer, with the judge standing in the background--that was so well staged. And the two of them watching the same movie even when they're not together, and poor beleaguered Frank and his interrupted lunches. What's not to like? (Except that it's the last episode.) Yeah, the jail scene here ranks as one of the best of the entire series. I'm also particularly fond of HC telling McC he thought maybe the kid forgot about his parole (or whatever he said), and McC says, "It's my parole, Judge; it's something I keep tabs on." (That's probably not it exactly, but that 'keepin' tabs on' thing has always killed me. Understated McC on the nose.) And, that guy HC got the repo business from, whatever his name was? Whatever he says to a completely out-of-the-loop McC about, "If they've got knives, you're pretty safe. But if they've got guns, run like hell!" That's just funny advice, first of all, but the look on McC's face is priceless. And absolutely yes, God love Frank in this episode. If he hadn't already been firmly entrenched in my heart before, this would've done it. Long-suffering doesn't even begin to cover it.

Yeah, it just so figures tha tif Milt was trying to find Mark a new job, it would involve a high potential for people coming at him with knives and guns. ;-)

Bup Taylor, was that it? Some kind of name like that. He was also in a "Westerner" episode. Ooh, how many people were in "Westerner", "H&McC" _and_ a Star Trek? I can think of one right off the top!

Okay, the first time I ever saw H &M was in syndication and the episode was called the birthday present. I had heard of the show when it first started, but because we only had 1 tv in the house, I could never watch it, but heard about how successfull in the ratings it was. Does anyone remember the ABC preview list of the new shows when they all showed up on the Love Boat? Gopher wanted to meet Brian Keith, and low and behold? There they were on the ship in the their tuxes. I remember DHK was standing very tall and serious. Nice!! Anyways, back to The birthday Present, this eppy really showed me a truly remarkable side of Mark/DHK that we never really got a chance to see except for the homecoming, but for him to pull a gun and kill someone was really an amazing moment. And at the end when mark talks to Harcastle, and Hardcase tells him he's a good kid, mark lets out a tear. I'll never forget this eppy, and I was sad that I only saw it once. I have the season 1 dvd, and can't wait for season 2.

Yup, The Birthday Present. It has to be in everybody's top five. Great humor in the first half, absolutely poignant ending. I think Cannell only wrote about five episodes for this series and this is one of them (The Career Breaker is one of the others, also a favorite of mine)
And welcome aboard!

My all-time favorite episode was the pilot movie, "Rolling Thunder". A close second would be "Do Not Go Gentle...". Probably the best from Season 2 was "The Long Ago Girl". We got to see more backstory on Hardcastle, which was rare as the writers usually opted to write more about Mark.
