The Game You Learn from Your Father Airdate: Mar. 18, 1985
When Billy Bauer is critically wounded committing a crime, he decides to come clean with the fact that, a number of years ago, he was paid $25,000 to frame baseball player Duke McGuire for murder. Although Bauer dies shortly after making his statement, there is sufficient cause to free Duke from prison. Feeling partially responsible for Duke serving a crime he did not commit, Hardcastle is determined to help him get back into baseball. Deciding the best way to get Duke noticed is to stage a media event, Mark has the released player challenge baseball player Ron Cey to an exhibition. Impressed with Duke's abilities, California Stars owner Chuck Foster hires Duke. The judge quickly realizes that Duke is still someone's target when drugs are planted in the player's locker. Investigating, Hardcastle discovers that Donald Farrell, the father of Nick Farrell, Duke's old rival, took a $25,000 mortgage on his house around the time Duke was framed. Confronting Donald, Hardcastle learns that Nick had borrowed the money. Meanwhile, Nick, convinced his career will be over if Duke returns (and seeing his drug plan fail), prepares to shoot Duke. Although Duke is wounded, Hardcastle and McCormick manage to stop Nick in time to prevent the player from suffering any permanent injuries. Guest Cast Tim Thomerson (Trancers) as Duke McGuire, Jeff MacKay (Black Sheep Squadron, Magnum P.I.) as Nick Farrell, Sandy Ward as Donald Farrell, Ray Girardin as Coach Harmson, Ken Swofford as Chuck Foster, Ron Cey as Himself Writer Patrick Hasburgh Director Kim Manners

Thank you for moving the site to a Board where we don't have to post the same message five times! The pictures are a very nice added bonus! I did like this episode (sorry, Lynn) in spite of all the baseball errors (no pun intended) that they should have fixed. I loved the music and the guest stars were terrific, especially Tim Thomerson and Jeff MacKay. DHK was great in this one, especially when he set up the whole scam with Ron Cey. I loved his enthusiastic calling of the three strikes. Barbara

Baseball errors, heh heh! That's what really bugs about this one, because there are some things they could have gotten right -- like calling the guy in the dugout the manager and not the coach. The scam on Ron Cey was cute, and you certainly can't fault the casting. It's really a pretty powerful story and you end up feeling sorry for just about everybody.
You know, if they'd just made the Stars a minor league team, it would all have been more believable, but I guess that just didn't have enough impact. I'll tell you one thing, though. It makes me count the day to Spring Training!

Hi, not so much on topic but congrats on moving to this board! Nice to have a home the hackers can't hack!
Just one question: I have some vision challenges and the light yellow on dark brown is hard for me to read. Is there a way for me to change to dark print on a light screen without messing it up for everyone else?
Thanks, Marilyn

There's a setting for the "skin" that I'm afraid to touch right now. I cannot get hold of Barb and the Proboards guy didn't call me back. L.M. Lewis and I are subsidiary mods here so let me look around and see what I can do and what I can't. Using the colors box is a very good idea, though; it doesn't work for Quick Reply which is what this is, but it will help with the "normal" ones.

I hope this color is a little easier to read. Apparently, ProBoards is going to be introducing a new version in a few weeks, so we'll see what happens with that.

Yes, we can fool around with the place as much as we want, but if they're only going to mess it up in a bit, let's save our energy for now. Many thanks to our new administrator for all the work already put in, and I do like the new color!

Just one question: I have some vision challenges and the light yellow on dark brown is hard for me to read. Is there a way for me to change to dark print on a light screen without messing it up for everyone else? Thanks, Marilyn Marilyn, if you go to your profile (top of page), and then select modify profile, you have the option to change the color scheme on your own account. There are only three options there, but the one labeled "default" is a white screen with black text. It's less glaring than the dark background, but it's pretty stark and may not be a whole lot better because the text isn't very dark, but you might give it a try.

Okay, I have also tinkered around with the skins a bit and created one called "mild". It alternates between a gray and white background w/black text. Marilyn, let me know if that works better for you, or if I can tweak it in some other way. Hopefully now that we have both dark and light choices, everyone will be able to find a color scheme that's comfortable to their eyes.

Hi! Not sure if this post's reference was to me or another Marilyn, but wanted to say I can read the blue against the black just fine. Not sure how I could access the 'mild' skin (unless you mean the one for this comment box, which is white with black type and which works great.
I can't seem to get the hang of posting here. I see there are lots of comments on this block but don't know how to read them. I know the spam drove us away from yahoo but my other groups there aren't having a problem and I wonder if just creating a new group would make a difference. But, then, I see 257 posts on this subject block so I figure I must be the only one who hasn't yet found a comfort level with this space. It's gorgeous and a lot of work has gone into it, so I'm not complaining about it; just admitting to a personal shortcoming when it comes to adapting to new technological environments.

Okay, saw the earlier message about how to change the skin and tried the 'mild' but like this blue on black better. I find it very easy to read. Thanks!

Thanks! Just saw this message and found it very helpful. I've checked the other skins and really like this blue on black one. I appreciate the help!

Just to say I liked this ep. The song has haunted me ever since. I think Kim Manners did a good job on directing this, even if they screwed up some of the baseball details. The plot was a bit convoluted, but I liked the Judge going out of his way to help Duke get another chance.

The music in this episode was one of the main reasons I loved it. According to the best go-to reference book written (by three of our board members!) on H&McC, "The Game Goes On" was originally written for The Greatest American Hero. But it fits into this episode perfectly and is a beautiful song.
