While on vacation in LA in 1984 I was lucky enough to watch a sequence from the episode "One of the Girls From Accounting" being filmed near downtown LA. This was on Monday September 24, 1984 on the corner of 3rd and Traction streets. The company was there from 7am till midnight. I was there taking snapshots from 3:30 to 10:30. I have a tape of this episode and it is interesting that the sequence runs less than 10 minutes in the show, but took 17 hours to film.
The sequence I saw began as Mark and secretary Kathy Kasternack are walking on the sidewalk when two bad guys in a postal van drive up on the sidwalk and try to run them down. Mark and Kathy duck into a parking garage and try to hide. Mark ends up pointing his shoe at the bad guys hoping that in the dim light they will mistake it for a gun.
They had just finished shooting this when DHK emerged from the garage to take a meal break.
The cast and crew ate from a catering truck. In the upper right you can see the top of the LA City Hall.
Here is DHK and an assistant director returning from break and going to a coffee shop on the corner where some interior scenes were to be filmed. I've seen this coffee shop used in other Cannell shows as well as an episode of Cagney and Lacy. In this episode, Mark and Kathy run out of the coffee shop chased by another bad guy. By this time it was dark outside.
In this photo they are lighting the side of the coffee shop. Someone felt that the wall was too blank looking so a gaffer got a tree limb(don't ask me where he found it) and attached it to a long pole and put it in front of an arc lamp to throw a shadow on the wall. A lot of time was spent on this. You have to look fast to see it in the finished episode.
Now they were ready to shoot. You see the camera crew on the far left filming DHK and Urseth as they exit the door and are confronted by a white pick up truck that jumps the curb and heads for them. At this point the actors were replaced by their respective stunt doubles and the doubles run across the street into another alley.
Brian Keith is in the center of this picture. He is wearing a blue shirt and tan pants. He has only a very brief scene in this sequence when he arrives in the nick of time in the GMC 4X4 to rescue Mark and Kathy. On the far right is DHK's stunt double. I don't know his name tho I heard someone call him Gil.
I wish I had taken more photos of the main actors but I didn't want to get too close because I was afraid the crew might ask me to leave.
