I read an internet story today about a fire along PCH near Pepperdine. Being that I'm a Jersey girl and not familiar with the logistics of SoCal, can anyone clue me in?: How far from the house?

Well, Amy could tell you better, since I'm operating off memories of one visit several years ago, but I'm gonna say about five miles. Too danged close, that's for sure.

Thanks. I read the story and got a lump in my throat! I did some research on the house. Many of you know this stuff already but I wanted to post it anyway: In 1943 Rick and Luella "Billie" Ulrich bought six acres of the oceanfront property at Latigo Point from Marblehead Land Co. for about $10,000. They added adjacent property bringing the total to eleven and one-half acres, covering most of the high ground above Latigo Shore Drive. The property includes a strip of beach between the ends of Latigo Beach Road and Malibu Cove Colony Road, separating the two neighborhoods. Two houses were constructed, first an 1,840 square foot guesthouse completed in 1947 and then a grand 6,000 square foot, three-story brick main house completed in 1971, along with a beach house, caretaker's cottage, manicured gardens, statuary, fountains and a waterfall. The compound is known as known as Gulls Way, with its entrance at 26800 Pacific Coast Highway. Gull's Way has been used as a location for hundreds of films and TV shows, including "Fantasy Island," "Hardcastle & McCormick" and "It's Only Money," starring Jerry Lewis. Rick Ulrich died in 1987 at the age of 86. In 1992 Billie, 91, arranged to donate the property to Pepperdine after her death in 1997. Pepperdine intended to use Gull's Way as a conference center, but could not get approval from City of Malibu for such as center in a residential neighborhood. Pepperdine listed the property for sale at $15 million in 2002. It is reported that Dick Clark bought it as an investment for an undisclosed sum. Malibu is "26 miles of scenic beauty." The distance from Pepperdine to Gulls Way is exactly 3.4 miles. maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=26800+pacific+coast+highway,+malibu,+ca&daddr=24255+pacific+coast+highway,+malibu,+ca&sll=34.407087,-118.468333&sspn=0.006515,0.010042&ie=UTF8&z=14&om=1 That's a HUGE distance in Malibu. The entire town is coastal and it's rare for fires to burn across the fuel starved beach. Most fires that start in Malibu race inland.

Speaking of fires, I hope none of our members have be displaced by the current one. Are all you folks in SoCal OK?

The brief history of Gullsway is accurate. The Ulrichs were my great aunt and uncle and I spent quite a bit of time there throughout the 1950s and 60s. My last visit, with my wife and newborn son, was in 1984. My mother lived there for several years. The many TV and motion pictures that were filmed there make for great stories (the gates and stone walls from It's Only Money" stood on the lower road down by the sundeck and are probably still there. I have photos of TJ Hooker filming, Hervé Villechaize's movie-star-packed wedding there (from Fantasy Island) which made the STAR newspaper, "beach party" movies during filming, Coyotes on set, etc. etc. The place does have an intersting hiistory and made for a fun home away from home off and on for many years. -

That's a fascinating bit of history and we are really looking forward to seeing the place next June. (The current owner is allowing us to take a small group out for a tour after the installation of Brian Keith's star on the Walk of Fame.) The place just looks so gorgeous and that view from the front lawn is unbeatable. The one disappointing thing will be the absence of the pool, but I am assured that the spa is still there!

The "Gulls Way" sign is gone too, huh?
