Hey everyone. I was wondering what 80's shows people liked other than "Hardcastle & McCormick." I put all my favorites on the list and gave you the option of choosing 'other' if you do not like any of those on there. You can give out some that are not mentioned. I want you to talk about how much you liked it based on what you choose.

Warning: this one's going to take a minute!
You know, I watched all of these shows to some degree (I've always been a bit of a TV junkie), but most of them--no matter how regularly I might've seen them-- were only a matter of scheduling convenience. There were only three that I would've ever gone out of my way to watch: GAH, MacGyver, and QL. They're hard for me to compare, because in a lot of ways they're dissimilar (though GAH and QL would be an easier comparison. You can find a lot of similarities in SJC and Bellisario, not the least of which is that they're pretty consistently entertaining). Anyway, so it boiled down to the idea of which would I watch if they ended up counter-scheduled against each other (and no recording was an option)? And for me, that was a pretty easy answer: Quantum Leap.
First, I'll just flat out say it: no matter how riddled with logic problems the basic premise may be, I am a sucker for the idea of time travel. Truly. In just about any form. Find a way to build anything approaching a reasonable framework around it, and I'm there. So, I'm predisposed, right off the bat.
Second, I thought there was an excellent chemistry between the costars. At that point, Bakula was Dr. Ted, from Designing Women, as far as I was concerned, but I'd always liked him on there. And Stockwell . . . well, Stockwell wasn't somebody that I probably could've come up with a handful of things I actually knew him from, but he was just one of "those guys". You know, the ones you see around? But, really, the reason you see those guys "around" is because they usually do a pretty good job, and I'd always sort of liked him, too. But together, I thought they were amusing, and touching, and sincere. It just worked.
And lastly, as much as I'm a sucker for time travel, I'm an even bigger sucker for buddy shows, and this one did that well. No matter what the episode of the week, invariably, the best moments of the show are scenes with Sam and Al together, whether they're goofing about something, or just talking, or being concerned for each other. Whatever. Those characters are friends--with all the good and the bad of that-- and they aren't afraid to show it. It doesn't get better than that, as far as I'm concerned.
Oh, ps. I'm not sure what system was used to determine which shows ended up in which decade; QL debuted in '89 and it's here, but I'm pretty sure Baywatch premiered that same year, and it's in the 90's. ST:TNG is also over in the 90's, even though it debuted in '87. Either way, I just want to say thanks for not letting ST and QL end up in the same poll; that would've been heartbreaking!

Glad somebody finally responded. There were things I had been wanting to say and had to hold off until another comment had been put. I have actually seen every single episode of "MacGyver", "Knight Rider", "Quantum Leap", and "Greatest American Hero". I have all the seasons for all those shows on DVD. It is cool to see all the stories created cause you feel like an expert on the show. I am about to see all the episodes to "Airwolf" as well cause the last season with the original cast comes out on DVD later this month. I do not include that fourth season where all the original characters were written out and replaced with a brand new cast. I will never watch any of those episodes as fans say they were real bad and led away from the original three seasons. I will also see every episode of "Hardcastle & McCormick" if the company will just get around to releasing that last season. I sure wish I knew why they are taking so long. I have Seasons 1-6 of "Magnum P.I." on DVD, but have not watched any of them yet because I have been busy lately. I just need Seasons 7 & 8 as that will complete the series for that show. I actually have all five seasons for the "A-Team" which I got for Christmas, but haven't watched any of them yet either for the same reason. But I do feel good knowing I have all the episodes and can go through them whenever I can get around to it.

But I am world's worst about buying them and then never getting around to watching them. That's another key test for me for how strongly I feel about a show; am I willing to shell out the money for something that I'm probably not going to watch? Knowing this, my buying habits are sporadic--no sense rushing right out to get something that's just going to sit on your shelf. But I will eventually finish the MacGyver collection (I only have the first two seasons so far) and, of course, I'll eventually get around to buying all of QL (only have the first three). But, of those five seasons total of the shows, I bet I haven't watched a dozen episodes total. Goofy, isn't it? So while I've seen every episode of QL multiple times (and probably even every episode of MacGyver, though I'd feel less confident about that assertion) when I talk about these shows, it is mostly from my original impressions of when they actually ran on network TV, or syndication.

Did you realize that some of the songs were removed from Season 2 & 3 of "Quantum Leap" and replaced with funny sounding music?

Did you realize that some of the songs were removed from Season 2 & 3 of "Quantum Leap" and replaced with funny sounding music? Actually, I didn't know that. So they're most likely in episodes I haven't watched yet. It's annoying to me when that happens, though. The first time I ran into it was actually on my Wiseguy set, and man, I was P.O.'d. If it hadn't been such a critical moment; if that entire scene hadn't been ingrained into my brain for years as a nearly perfect moment of television; if it hadn't just worked the way it was originally filmed, then I wouldn't have cared at all. But, dang, sometimes the music really matters, and I wish the bean counters wouldn't forget that.

It was obvious that Universal just wanted to do a quick release. They even had Sam leap into the wrong people at the end of some episodes. They were having him leap into people he had already been sometimes and I found that really annoying. Like in the last Season 1 episode, they had him leap into the woman he is for the first time instead of the cop on the train which is the Season 2 premiere. And they have him leap into that black man he was for the first time at the end of some Season 2 episodes when you know he has already been him in like the sixth episode.
I first discovered songs from the original production were gone when disco songs "That's the Way I Like It", "Kung-Fu Fighting", and "The Hustle" were replaced with that funny sounding music I told you about in episode 'Disco Inferno'. What really pisses me off is that they removed "Georgia On My Mind" from episode 'M.I.A.' They even mentioned it in the episode, but it looked silly not actually being used. They did still use a song in some episodes if a character was talking about it while it was being played. I guess that was so the scene would make sense. A lot of people on message boards were saying they wished they had kept their recorded episodes from the Sci-Fi channel if they had known the DVDs were going to screw with the songs like that.

There are a lot of '80's series that I have on disc and that I rotate my viewings of, from "Hart to Hart" S1 and S2 to "Moonlighting" S1-S2. Even "St. Elsewhere" S1 gets a viewing every so often from me.

Well, if we're talkin' 80's shows not on DVD...
AfterM*A*S*H*: I boycotted it back then because I was PO'ed that M*A*S*H ended. I could kick myself now, because I never saw a single episode. I heard it stunk up the joint, but I'd still like too see it anyway.
Just for kicks I'd like to see a couple episodes of:
Houston Knights Call To Glory Cover Up Aloha Paradise Supertrain Automan Bring 'Em Back Alive
and of course... Heartland, I Married Dora, and Chicago Story
