Ok, my favorite part of this episode is when the guys are riding in Hardcastle's truck and discussing young/old guys and chicks....and when Hardcastle says....'guys like you ought to keep your eyes on the rear view mirror' and McCormick replies, "for what? Guys like you?" And Hardcastle says, "Now you're cookin"
And then McCormick let's loose on what I've always thought is sort of an unscripted ad-lib laugh...and even Hardcase seems to really display a grin too (almost like BK wasn't holding back after seeing DHK go off).
Did anyone else think this was sort of an ad-lib funny?

Ever since I rediscovered the show on DVD, I have always felt the spontaneity from the 2 actors in many episodes.
The outburst laugh from DHK after Hardcastle says that line would not surprise me if this was an ad-libbed moment. Sure the line was scripted, but the reaction from McCormick, probably pure DHK.
We can certainly name several. But I can only recall DHK's, simply because his were the most memorable.
DHK's little diddly to Big-john, renaming it "skid-mark" during Just another round of that old song, when they're searching for the missing $750,000.
DHK flying over the coyote and missing. BK responding to his errol flynn comment, pretty sure that was an ad-lib. I'm guessing that was a flub, but left in as it was a shining moment for the show.
DHK blowing smoke through his nose in Stranglehold.
BK's joke at the end of too rich and too thin. I think that whole scene at the end was improved. The guys were just having too much fun.
Can anyone else name a few?

OK, in School for Scandal, at the end when DHK is trying to get BK to tell him what he said to Robert Culp (Hardcastle told Culp that McCormick had integrity and McCormick was trying to get him say what he said to Culp) when DHK started cracking up I though that was an ad-lib.
Geez, I know there's a ton more but I can't think of any more. The thing I have always loved about this show, is the chemistry between BK and DHK. I have never seen a show since where the two main characters had that much chemistry. You can really see they respected and cared for one another in real life.

How about their basketball matches in season 1. During the Black Widow?
The boxing match during the tag scene in the eppy the Boxer.
I read an article in the H&MCC scrapbook that BK and DHK did alot of adlibbing and were aloud to do it.
A few years back DHK did a radio interview and talked about how he used to do it and doesn't anymore, because it's his job as an actor to read the scripts and follow the scripts. He didn't think it was his place to change the dialogue. Funny, I would prefer that he did as there were some shows or films he did where adlibbing might have helped the show better.
AS for the chemistry, I totally agree. It's funny, there are shows, like Friends and Star Trek the next Gen that have amazing chemistry, but they're an ensemble, when we're talking about 2 people generating this great friendship. I don't even think Starsky and Hutch had this much friendship, do you?

I think I found another 'ad lib.' From the 'Hot Shoes' episode...at the end, when Mark gives his racing helmet to Milt and tells him to 'try it on.' And BK actually takes it and tries to stick it on his head....You can tell it doesn't get too far on his head....
Yeah, the thing I loved about this show was exactly what you all are saying....these guys actually enjoyed working together. It's clearly obvious, I remember seeing the pilot back when I was in college...and my roomie and I both sort of looked at each other at the end of it and said, 'this show is something special' Now after having the first 2 seasons on DVD, it's special again to re-watch. I think the fact that they respected each other off screen just adds so much to their characterizations on-screen. It's often missing in today's shows.

I don't even think Starsky and Hutch had this much friendship, do you? Getting a little off-topic here, yes, at the time Paul and David were great friends, which is what made the series worth watching despite some bad scripts. It wasn't until later, after David was busted for spousal abuse and some other more private episodes, that Paul pulled away from him as a friend.

Did anyone else think this was sort of an ad-lib funny? Absolutely! It's the first scene i ever screen-capped from H&M: pheral.livejournal.com/24201.html...and still my favourite scene from the show. DHK's laugh gives me the biggest grin you can iamgine, it's so wonderfully infectious in that scene. I personally think it was scripted for him to laugh at first, but when BK couldn't help grinning it sent DHK into another spate of *real* laughter. I absolutely adore it, it makes me so happy! Lol. Will have to watch it today, now you've brought it to mind.

Great screencap! Yep that's exactly the spot....and when he adds, "I love it," man, it's just awesome, it's one of my all time favorite scenes of all of TV!

I'm sure it was scripted to for Mark to show some sort of laughter, but his outburst would probably be ad-libbed, and BK enjoyed it as well.
Again, it's one of the things I really enjoyed about the show is how these 2 put together a good scene and turn it into a great scene.

and when he adds, "I love it," man, it's just awesome, it's one of my all time favorite scenes of all of TV! Yes! Lol, it's so gorgeous. I love the fact that Mark's laughter is so joyful. I think that's why i'm so sad about them not ever finding the bloopers from this show too, because with DHK's laughter and friendship the two actors had, they would be been such fun to watch.
