I know I have been posting a lot lately asking for new stories and tossing out strange ideas. But tonight I could not resist, I have a new room mate who lives in my kitchen and I have not been having much luck catching him. How would Mark handle a mouse in the main house, would he drive Milt crazy? I am hoping that someone can put a little comical spin on my situation.

Mark was a lonely little boy who lived in very "ratty" apartments with his mother. I can picture him having befriended a mouse as a child. It might have been the only pet he ever had.
I remember once when my own kids were small, we had a mouse try to take up residence near the pilot light of our gas range, under the range top. It would peek out from around the burner unit at night. I had to quit using that unit for a few days until I could set a trap without my kids finding out about it, because they thought the mouse was adorable and almost went into hysterics at the thought of my trying to kill it! You should have seen how hard they worked trying to keep out cat OUT of the kitchen for those few days, too. I even caught them dropping bits of food around the burner especially for the mouse to find!
Then again, he could also think back to living in those ratty apartments and having to protect his own food and belongings from unwanted "roommates". .. rats as well as mice. It's not unheard of for small children to be bitten by rats, so that kind of memory could even bring back some childhood nightmares for Mark. Since we know his uncle wasn't the nicest guy around, he could also have memories of being shut in a dark basement or shed by the uncle, with only rats for company.
There are lots of possibilities for some great stories from this plot bunny.

I once worked in a library with a serious mouse problem. The maintenance staff put out sticky traps. After a mouse got caught in one of the traps, a tenderhearted coworker spent quite a while freeing him.
I wonder if Mark would do that, too. Or would it matter if the mouse was in the main house or the gatehouse?

I decided to take up this mouse challenge and I wrote a little something that may bring a smile to those who read it.
