One of my all time favourites, and I haven't even seen a clear picture of it yet! I have feeling that's once I see it on DVD its going to be a real heart stopper! The whole scene in the hospital after Hardcastle has woken up is so well acted, and nicely understated. I like the fact that the emotion is very much contained - and that trembling from Mark is so wonderfully portrayed. But I do have to say that I do shout at the screen that Mark really does need a hug!!!!! Wait until you get the DVD AJK, especially during DHK's close-up you can really see the emotion in his eyes in great detail. The whole tag scene was very well played. I just can't enough of how well I enjoyed this eppy especially the last 15 minutes. I guess if I were to redo it, I would have had hardcastle shot about half-way through, Mark gets a chance to say goodbye to the judge and then look for Weed. I did think the last act was a little rushed, but still didn't ruin the brilliance of this episode. SJC really deserves a commendation for this one. Thanks Steve.

Yup, this one could have been a two-hour episode. Would have made a great cliff-hanger, much like 'The Homecoming'.

Oh it is, it is... hope you get your dvds soon! Yes! I do that too, lol. Come to think of it though, in the whole show, has Milt ever initiated a hug? I remember a few times when Mark hugs Milt and Milt growls at him and pushes him away, despite looking like he's enjoying it really... but is there ever a situation where Milt hugs Mark, rather than Mark hugging Milt?? Not that i'd want that more than once... Milt's gruff-but-caring demeanor is the best. ;D

This episode as a two parter - I like it! Can you image if that 'To be continued' had come up on the screen after the judge had been shot, with Mark almost pleading with him to open his eyes. I think I would have chewed through several cushions and said some very unlady like things at the TV!
As it stands Jadzia you are right the last act is a little rushed, but it is still great stuff.
Can't think of an episode where Milt intiates a hug - but it would be good to see, only as a one off - as you say pheral part of the charm of the relationship - is that you know Milt wants to show overt affection but, it just isn't in his nature to hug and as he would say himself 'slobber' over people.

No, no Hardcastle hugs whatsoever. There is the occasional hand on the shoulder ('Surprise on Seagull Beach' for one) but apparently hugs are in violation of the curmudgeon code. Mark sort of gradually catches on, too--a hug under extreme duress in 'Homecoming', but later on, in 'Do Not Go Gentle', it's a hand on the shoulder and after the shooting in 'Long Ago Girl', it's just hands-off fussing.

But in 3rd season, McC makes a move at a hug on "Train" just before finding himself locked in the convenience. Then, on "Chip", there's a real hug and a real curmedgeonly fend-off. "Too Many Hugs", a book by Lex Portly.

Yeah, it's very easy for me to say 'two parter' now, from the safe distance of owning a whole season on dvd, but with a week (or even two) between the set-up and the resolution, I would have been pretty distracted. Small price to pay, however, for an extra hour on this one.

But in 3rd season, McC makes a move at a hug on "Train lol, i love the fact that eventually Milt seems to be able to almost tell by Mark's stance that he's going to swoop in for a hug, and starts to bat him away before he's even started! lmao ;D No, no Hardcastle hugs whatsoever. There is the occasional hand on the shoulder ('Surprise on Seagull Beach' for one) but apparently hugs are in violation of the curmudgeon code. Ooh, yes, true, and there's a hand on the shoulder from Milt in You Never Hear The One That Gets You too, and plenty of 'watching' going on, to make sure Mark's okay. And you're totally right that Mark adapts a bit to fit with what Milt seems comfortable with, i'd not thought of that... that scene in Long Ago Girl is very sweet, for Mark's insistence that Milt tell him he's ok before he goes after the bad guy. That's all almost better than hugging really.

The affection between Mark and Hardcastle is there, I think that is one of the main reasons I liked the show so much. Mark is more of an affectionate person and the judge is a bit crustier but he does display his affection in a more understated way. I watched this episode last night after reading some of the comments about it here on this thread. Really brings out the subtle moments. Helped me to appreciate the whole thing alot more. Thanks

Yeah, rewatching and then pooling thoughts really adds to an episode, i love hearing the bits that other pick up and i miss! (especially seeing as i spent 99% of the episode staring at Mark's hair and ignoring everything else :

I know what you mean, some episodes it is easy to get distracted by other things besides the story line. ;D

the hair was the only thing I didn't like in this episode. But I guess it was to show us that compared to Mark, Sandy is supposed to be this hot chick-magnet with the perfect hair and the perfect apartment and the perfect everything. Mark is just the ex-con.
But, during the episode you really hate everything Sandy represents and you just love Mark for who he is, and doesn't have to look like Sandy to be noticed.
Okay, everyone gather around and give Mark a big hug and kiss..

Yeah, one watching for the hair, then one more for the plot ;-) plottt? puh..lot? plote? nope, i dont get it. i am so supremely unplotty, alot of the episodes i've watched, you'd just have no idea i'd actually watched them, because i'll be d**ned if i can remember what happened. i just remember 'that was the one with the hug', 'that was the one where Mark got in a fight', etc etc. It's awful. My shallow nature knows no bounds. the hair was the only thing I didn't like in this episode. Repent! Repent ye your sinful remarks! Mmmmm...curly hair...
