I know why, but I really, really enjoyed the Mark in peril stories. They were all so well written and very intense, I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen to him.
Does this make me a sadist?
I think my 2 favs were Dead Wait and Say Goodbye to the judge for me. I think if these stories were written while the show was on the air, maybe they could have made for good eppys.
Anyways, if there are any more Mark torchure stories, please send them my way. ;D

And I am tickled to hear that 'Dead Wait' made the your short list, Jadzia, 'cause I am not the best whumper around--I go more for angst--but I have been contemplating some serious whumping lately.

I would say that I enjoy the really good whumps as well as a really good love scene or a scene with some solid sexual tension between the 2 characters (no, I don't mean actual nude scene or that type of sexuality), but a scene where the tension makes your mouth water and you really want the characters to develop something. When I saw Faster Heart, I was waiting for something to happen between Mark and KiKi, and it seems like poor writing killed the chemistry between the 2 characters. Nothing excited me about these 2. On the other hand, Mark and Christie from Homecoming, that was pretty amazing. I would have liked to have seen more Mark-beefcake parts with the female gueststars, but no. I was hoping to see more of that in fanfic, but I'll just have to stick to the Mark getting torchured scenes instead.

You gotta be kidding me! You write fantastic whump, whenever i want H&M fic i just head on over to your section at ff.net. And what makes it ten times better is that you not only whump, but you really write quality stuff too. Excellent style, perfect characterisation - and i've been really affected by some of the emotional ones. I've been sitting on a truckload of squeeish feedback for ages, someday i might even get round to sending you an email! Oiy vey. shame on you. but then, the term did evolve through danny-whumping, so i can't criticise. if it weren't for danny we'd have no decent name for it! Oh, and i'm loving the sound of that 'serious whumping'. Go go go! ;D

Yeah, i totally agree - anything that introduces drama and tension and risk will force the characters to grow and interact in a more dramatic fashion, whumping included.

The biggest problem with writing love scenes with original characters is the Mary Sue accusation. Luckily, on this series Mark had some serious relationships like with Kathy and Christie. I can't handle Kiki. Any woman who would lie about being pregnant is lower than slime in my opinion, and I wouldn't want to see anything of her in the future. That chick in "Never My Love" was another idiot female who had no chemistry with Mark. The boy sure can pick 'em. I'll excuse his bimbo of the week only because I assume he's making up for the couple of years in the hoosegow.

Boy howdy, did you nail it on Kiki and the Idiot Chick (Cyndy Wenzek)! Seeing them with McCormick just makes me feel slightly ill. Now, Christi Miller -- that lady rocked! I'd love to see her come out to the estate for a visit; would she insist on staying in the gatehouse? But Liz is right about the Mary Sue issue.

Beware the perils of the Mary Sue. All OC's are risky. They're always a tough sell, even though they're necessary to advance some plot lines and awfully handy to illuminate some aspects of the regular characters. Just remember, as fond as you may be of your OC's, to everyone else, they're just spear-carriers, red shirts, whatever. So, when I wanted to go forward on the time line, it felt like I was really rolling the dice--and I did catch a little flack for it. But, honestly, if he didn't make some forward progress, it would've started looking a little Peter Pan to me.

Even his collegues whumped him when he came up with that goofy theory about the aliens and the pyramids. 'Course that was an angst-whumping. I don't think Phd types hangout back of the lecture hall with baseball bats. Though it's a thought. ;-)

My request would be to see a follow up to Christie's invitation to Mark in a fanfic.
Remember? "I'll be waiting with the light on in the window."
The producers had a wide-opened opportunity there and missed it. Instead they brought us Kathy Wensik and Kiki Cutter Yuck!!
With respect for Kiki, I think the writers/producers were trying to make Mark a little more grown up but failed miserably. I mean, when Kiki propositioned him, I was very proud of him when he turned down her advances. But then what does he do? He changes his mind, and thanks to Hardcastle, it gets stopped right there. Way to go Milt. I never liked the relationship, maybe because of how it was written. How can Mark forgive someone who dumped him because he didn't win a drag race, and then to tell him she was pregnant? Mark, waake up.
