I have to go with "Drive". It just added flavor to the opening credits, and summed up what the show is all about.

Yes, drive does add something to the credits, but I think Back to Back decsribes the two guys and their relationship well. From different sides meeting in the middle to work together.

I think it's really hard to pick between the two; it's like the classic "apples and oranges" problem. What I really think is that each of them was perfect for the seasons they were designed for, though if I had my druthers, we would've had yet a third song for the final season.
Drive was a little harder, a little more frantic, and about a lot of rules, regulations, and keeping things under control. Just what we needed in the early stages of the relationship.
Back to Back, on the other hand, was calmer, more light-hearted, and all about settling in. Yeah, they're from different worlds, but--wonder of wonders-- here they go, acting like friends. Again, exactly what we see. (And, really, we see it way earlier than season two, I suppose, but one song per season seems reasonable.)
Season three should've been a more mature song about the way life goes on, and the foundations that support you through those changes. Nothing sappy, but just something established and permanent, know what I mean?
At least, that's my take on the whole thing.

Well, I voted 'Drive' just 'cause I think the lyrics are so good, and they meshed so well with the visuals in the opening credits of season one. Also it's the angstier of the two songs.
But if ever there was a show with two perfectly good opening credit songs, it was this one.

I Definately Prefer the First Season theme "Drive", but at the same time for a 2nd theme song back to back is pretty d**n good to.

I have to agree with Cheri about both songs. I think Drive was great for Season 1. Anything mushier would not have been right, just yet. But by the second season the show was not about a race car driver and a retired judge going after criminals, but about two men who had formed a unique bond and what some might consider an unusual friendship. Okay, so they still went after criminals, that was just so they could have a storyline. The real show was about the relationship.
And the relationship was what I liked about the show, so therefore I preferred "Back to Back".

I wanna ask a question to see if my episodes are screwed up. Why do people associate "Back To Back" with Season 3? All of my episodes have "Drive" as the theme song to Season 3. I always thought it was "Drive" in Season 1, then "Back To Back" in Season 2", then "Drive" returned for Season 3.
As for the theme songs, it's too hard to choose. I think as a song, "Drive" was better, it was cooler, and it sounded better. But "Back To Back" was also really good, and described more what the show was about & represented. I think "Drive" represented Season 1 the best, whereas "Back To Back" represented Seasons 2 & 3 the best, even tho "Drive" returned in Season 3.

Has to be 'Drive' for me. One of the best theme tunes around.

Drive From Season 1 is the best to me. I have it in my mp3 player. But I do like "Back to Back" too.

you are correct. Drive was used for season 1, then Back to back started season 2. Halfway through season 2 they went back to Drive and it was also used for season 3. what i'd like to know, does anyone remember the alternate version of drive that was used on some stations? i'm guessing i saw it on WGBO channel 66 in chicago since i have some old tapes of H&M from that time (although they don't include what i'm referring to) I was only 6 when H&M was cancelled so i don't think i remember this from it airing on NBC. i think i remember seeing most of the H&M eps on that chicago channel when it aired on there in the early-mid 90s anyway. i seem to recall them using the version of drive that plays at the end of rolling thunder while mark is being chased back to california. the main difference is that twords the end of the opening credits on the normal version, when mark is seen in the jail cell, you hear the line "everybody's doing time". that changes to "time will tell, if your on the road to win, win or lose, you won't get this chance again......" and then ends with the familliar "DRIVE!" at the end. does anyone else remember this? The show never aired on NBC. It was an ABC show. Maybe the reruns were shown on an NBC affiliate in your area? Do you have the DVD's? After viewing the episodes for the 1st time in 20+ years, I realized that I remembered some nuances about the show incorrectly (like some guest stars), and forgot other things completely (like Frank being in episodes he wasn't, and the same for Sarah)... and I was in high school when Hardcastle and McCormick originally aired! Honestly, I don't know how it was/is done, but I believe the local stations edit clips into commercials which may have included edited or "mashed-up" versions of the theme. The syndicated versions of the shows sold to the local stations may have has included edited music as well.

whoever wrote this article must have never bothered to watch it as a lot of his/her quotes and thoughts about the show are totally wrong.
