Hello Everyone,
As I understand it, the Coyote Mark I had/has a VW-Porshe 914 engine (many thanks to Long Ago Girl for affirming what I thought I knew).
Does anyone know where I might obtain a sound clip of such a motor online? Or do I simply need to hang around a local parking lot until an old '60s VW bug pulls up to get an idea of what such an engine sounds like?
The reason I ask this is because I've always wondered just how close the *real* Coyote comes to sounding like the throaty "racing car" roar we hear at the beginning of the Season 1 H&M theme song. I've always been led to believe that what we heard was Pure Sound Effects, and that the sound of the *real* engine would be, um, somewhat less than impressive (to put it mildly).
And, of course, the corollary to the above question is: does the engine of the Mark II Delorean-based Coyote have a *deeper* roar? Or was the engine the same VW/Porsche engine as the Mark I, with the only change being a different chassis?

There's some youtube Porsche 914 racing footage-- www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JvKIydWgnMDon't know what the audio quality (that one sounds a little, I dunno, thin to me) is nor which engines are in which cars, but there are a lot of clips labeled 'Porsche 914' on that site. I, as always, know zilch about cars, but if that one's not right, maybe you'll have more success rooting around over there. I always assumed the Foley guys can't resist sweetening up everything, if only because we've come to expect things to sound a certain way--including whacks to the chin, doors slamming, and car engines revving up and down endlessly. Real wouldn't sound right.

I had heard and read somewhere that the Manta used on the show had a Chevy 350 V-8.

If you check out the movie "The Gumball Rally" towards the end when the Cobra and the Ferrari are racing in the aqueduct (I think thats what you call it lol). Listen out for the "Coyote" Sound effect. I dont think it was so much what kind of engine made the sound, but what originated the orginal sound effect. The Gumball Rally I believe was filmed in the mid-70s, before Cannonball Run.

i have been looking for ages for the coyote sound effect. i could not find out which car it is. as someone said in another thread it is exaclty the sound of the black lamborghini countach in "cannonball" driven by the two ladies. however, the countach does not sound like this and why should they dubb a V12 lambo?
i checked with some older v12 ferraris, a BBi etc. but thats not even close. it has to be an italian car, but i have no idea which. the sound is the most important feature of the car anyway so i am dying to find out which car it is that makes this sound?

after a little research on youtube, here we go. listen to the sound of the engine of the car at about time 5:00: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZyTdPK92V8does it sound familiar? yeeees. the reason for me to doubt the sound of the coyote being from a V12 countach was that the car can also sound very different from that: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUOuYQaN4ZQbut different does not mean worse......

you can clearly hear the coyote sound effects at the very beginning of the cannonball run...as thunderstruck said they probably originally came from a countach.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eU8j4MeJ4I

Has anyone tried to contact someone from the production company that worked on the show back then? Even though some members of the team may be retired since show left the air in 86, surely someone has to have a definitive answer on this.

in season one if you look at the intro the tach is a Ferrari's, along with the console and shifter. also it sound in most of the shows is coming from a Ferrari 308. the cars had v-8s in them. thats why you get a throaty sound.
