Whew, almost 28 years ago. Now, one of the common definitions of 'legally blind' is uncorrectable vision of 20/200. Heck, that's only about two diopters correction, not all that horribly thick. On the other hand, I function tolerably well at close range without my glasses (which is to say, I can see things by the time I'm close enough to trip over them), and I'm 20/600 range, so someone who couldn't move around easily on a set must either be way more myopic than that, or have some pretty awful astigmatism.
