Do Not Go Gentle Airdate: Nov. 4, 1985
Entering the hospital for a routine checkup, Hardcastle discovers that he is dying from an incurable disease. Not wanting to let his friend just fade away, Mark convinces Hardcastle to live his remaining days to the fullest, Taking Mark's advice to heart, the judge, using the money he inherited from his wife, buys a one million dollar boat. Hardcastle's boating career is short lived, however, for armed men steal the boat. Although Hardcastle is initially willing to let the police handle the crime, he changes his mind after discovering that the hospital made a mistake and he is not really dying. Searching the docks, Hardcastle and McCormick locate the boat. Instead of reclaiming his property, Hardcastle discovers that the boat really belongs to an influential Senator. Realizing that Barry Jackson, the man who illegally "sold" him the boat, is a con artist, Hardcastle contacts his bank to find out where his money is being transferred. With Lieutenant Harper's help, Hardcastle and McCormick stake out the bank and capture Jackson. In the process, Hardcastle recovers his money.
Guest Cast Allan Arbus (M*A*S*H) as Dr. Friedman, Sam Freed as Barry Jackson, David Selburg as Ned Phillips Writer Patrick Hasburgh Director Bruce Kessler
Thanks, as always, to Howard Konig for the synopsis.

I love this ep. I love Allan Arbus as Dr, Friedman; he's one of my fav occasional characters. Most of all, I love how Mark responds, how he wants Milt to live to the max, and how he just won't accept the 'fade away' option. I love how he's not in it for the money, doesn't even want it, not when it means Milt won't be there. I love the music in this ep and the 'life's a beach and then you die' reworking of the original saying. I love Milt wanting to do right by McCormick -- I think his joy in setting sail in the yacht was mostly because his happiness in what he believed would be his last days would make Mark happy. The poignancy, the comedy, the case ... just one of my fav eps.

This is also quite a memorable episode. The script is really good and it has a strong storyline. The actors were excellent together in this ep. The expressions on their faces were quite something. The way Hardcastle's face looked when he discovered who the passengers on his stolen boat were, was priceless. McCormick's naughty face, when he was ordered to dial 911 in the truck, was a real riot.

I've always been impressed how this episode managed to be a wonderful blend of drama, sadness, and comedy. None of the funny scenes seemed out of place, even before Milt found out that he was going to be fine. The acting was so good, especially the scene in the restaurant. I loved the montage of events on the sailboat, with the music making the action even better.

You'd have to go pretty far to find anything to criticize about this one. The emotions are so deep...it was a great idea for an ep.
My favourite part is the scene in the hospital where Mark is so seriously worried that he's finally driven Milt crazy.

This is one of the universal favorites, deservedly. Great script, great acting and directing, great music montages, and great character explication. Is it the best episode they did? Possibly, although there are a couple of others that should be included in that discussion. But this has to be in the top three on everybody's list.

So glad to rediscover you guys.. So good to be back. This was a really cute episode. Will have to admit that my favorite scene was during the sloop john b montage where McCormick gets it right between the eyes from the swinging sale.

Welcome back, Jadzia. Was the video "A Friend Like You" done by you? I love it - the music fits so perfectly with the scenes you put together. handmfunstuff.homestead.com/HOME.htmlBarbara

Yes, indeed, welcome back, Jadzia! I know how hard it is to find "Love Boat" episodes, but the only one I have is the season premiere that featured "Hardcastle and McCormick". That one is up on our playground here, for anyone who hasn't seen it yet: handmfunstuff.homestead.com/HOME.html

Well it was worth a shot.
I have the 1983 Love boat ABC special on disc. Cool to see my favorite character Gopher introduce our 2 guys. The outfits they wore seem to have been recycled on one of the H&Mc eppys.

Please, where can I see this? I was totally unaware of this ep; quit watching Love Boat before this was shown.

Thank you so much! It was really cute.
Although I watched H&M from the very first episode, I did miss that Love Boat special. Didn't even know it existed.

I also have the 1984 Love boat special, but our boys never showed up.
I believe there is a 1985 special where our boys appear but the seller can't confirm this. I am going to order this and see. It's another love boat special and it's the one where Macgiver is introduced. If it is the same special, I will be able to forward to owlcroft to upload to the site.

Before you do that, check out the one we have. It's the one where they introduce all the new shows, including "Hardcastle and McCormick". I don't think they were in more than one, the one we have that was aired in September of 1983.
